For boutique fitness studio brand 1Rebel’s fifth venue the brief was to create a unique and contextual space while maintaining a consistent brand experience. London Victoria’s new-build surroundings provided a ‘contextless’ environment, allowing Studio C102 free rein for a piece of playful event architecture that supports 1Rebel’s aim of attracting a wider audience than a traditional gym by delivering fitness classes as entertainment.

At the heart of the design is the UK’s first multi-tier cycling auditorium, with an 80-person capacity and state-of-the-art AV technology. Studio C102 constructed a full-height intervention containing the auditorium and changing facilities within the 10m-high space. Inspired by the avant-garde architecture of the 1960s, the dramatic volume appears like an alien spaceship.

The instructor performs on a scissor lift that can be raised up, and the podium is illuminated by a bespoke laser semi-cyclone and has a backdrop of a LED video wall. The auditorium is externally wrapped in aluminium expanded mesh and backlit by a grid of programmable circular LED fittings. Underneath the inclined soffit of the auditorium is a 9m-long mirror-polished bar/reception counter facing the main entrance. At the rear of the space is a custom-designed electromagnetic flip-dot message board.

Changing facilities are accessed via a 10m-high staircase lined with white PVC strip curtains. A mirrored ceiling accentuates the height, while reflecting the Dan Flavin inspired light features. The changing rooms provide the most direct link with previous 1Rebel sites, using DTile ceramics to clad vanity units, heated benches and shower stalls.
