In Atlanta’s Stockyards district, which harmonises industrial heritage and creative-class leanings, a revamped former slaughterhouse is now a multifaceted workplace for three advertising agencies – Fitzco, Momentum and Weber Shandwick – who have come together in one unique space.

Two separate buildings have been combined, and the joining of the buildings’ fabrics informed the concept’s themes of duality and liminality. The idea was to design the spaces ‘in-between’, stitching together the old and the new. It’s an experience that embraces the embedded character of the site, while three different agencies converge under one roof.

The charming industrial atmosphere is thanks to the use of existing materials and features. The ceiling’s exposed timber beams, building-length skylight, and much of the brickwork are restored to honour the site’s history. This contrasts with modern furnishings and finishes, while some of the building’s salvaged timber has been repurposed into furniture.

Open workspace, ‘crit space’, and spaces to unplug are all in close proximity to support the creative process in a truly multimodal experience. However, the former slaughterhouse is designed for more than just work: in the spirit of ‘southern hospitality’, the welcoming third-floor lounge builds on the theme of duality by both hosting client events and serving as an alternative workspace. The whimsical nostalgia is always present; this floor includes a bank vault converted into a unique meeting room.

The adaptive reuse of this 75-year-old building is a transformation of space, materials, work styles and relationships, which makes the entire workplace a destination.
