UNC unveils renovated Bowman Gray Memorial Indoor Pool

University of North Carolina (UNC) has reopened The Bowman Gray Memorial Indoor Pool following a 15-month construction and renovation scheme to make it compliant with fire safety and disability regulations.

The remodelled Bowman Gray Memorial Indoor Pool unveiled on 6 October 2010 is compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and NFPA Fire and Life Safety codes. The extensive renovation project re-grouted the entire inside of the pool. The locker rooms have also received upgrades.

Six twenty-five metre lanes, six twenty-five yard lanes and two fifty metre lanes are now available for recreational swimming for full-time UNC-CH undergraduate and graduate students.

The pool renovation was necessary as the old facility built in 1930s was not compliant with the fire code or the Americans with Disabilities Act. A sprinkler system and a lift for people with disabilities have been added to the facility.
