Ultra Violet is Pantone Color of the Year 2018

The experts at Pantone’s Color Institute have revealed their Color of the Year 2018, and the world has responded.

“Complex and contemplative,” is what Pantone’s Color Institute call their Color of the Year 2018. The color “suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now.” But what is the color that Pantone describe so luxuriously? What shade that will be coloring our world in the New Year? The answer: Ultra Violet.

As a consulting service within Pantone, the Pantone Color Institute forecasts global color trends every year. They also advise companies on color within their brand identities or product development – making Pantone truly the global authority on color.

A “dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade”, it makes sense that Ultra Violet would be the leading color choice for 2018, after a year that saw fashion and home décor trends dominated by mythical creatures including unicorns and mermaids.

Exploring new technologies and space exploration have also permeated in mainstream culture, which Pantone allude to in their comment when describing Ultra Violet and the 2018 Color of the Year: “The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.”

This perplexing purple-blue shade, Pantone continue, is also symbolic of “counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality.”

The design world has reacted to the news, with everything from room designs to corkscrews – including pieces from Roche Bobois, Robert’s and Stepevi. As Pantone suggest, Ultra Violet “can transform a room into one of extraordinary self-expression, or conversely its polish can tone down a room with subdued, modern pairings.”

Making our own prediction here at DesignCurial, we’re sure there will be much more to see of this vibrant Ultra Violet.
