#4 University College Cork
The University College Cork Ireland (UCC) has received several remarkable awards for their green initiatives. These include energy conservation, recycling, saving water and more.
A standout building for sustainable design is UCC's Western Gateway Building (top), selected as the winner in the Renewable Energy Systems category at the annual Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) Energy Awards in Dublin in November 2011.
The building's leading design uses heat wasted from computer rooms combined with a ground source heat to regulate the heating and cooling to the building. Compared to other campus buildings this design saves 30% more energy.
UCC are extremely conscious of their impact on the environment on a local, national and international level, and have instilled strong eco-friendly policies as an Environmental Management System. Some the processes in place include giving consideration to environmental issues and energy performance in the acquisition, design, refurbishment, location and use of buildings, reducing pollution, provide appropriate environmental training, promoting environmental awareness among the community and more.
