Rotterdam-based architecture practice NIO is the mastermind behind this bold bus station design. Shaped similar to a whale's mouth and coloured a striking orange, the shelter juxtaposes Hoofddorp's Spaarne Hospital where it is sat outside of.

Built in 2003 this mammoth creation also acts as a roundabout for the hospital. The design echoes the likes of Oscar Niemeyer with its fusion of black Baroque and white modernism.

NIO has been extremely savvy with its use of materials to maintain within its budget for the, as labelled by the practice 'Amazing Whale Jaw'. The shelter is built entirely from polystyrene foam and polyester - thus making it the world's largest structure made from synthetic materials, measuring 50m x 10m x 5m.
