Few people passing The Lawn for the first time would guess that this unassuming (some would say downright ugly) building was Grade II listed by English Heritage. In fact the building, which was designed by architect, town planner and landscape designer Frederick Gibberd as part of his design for Harlow New Town is considered to be Britain's first residential tower block. There were two one-bed flats and two bedsitters on each of the 10 floors. The projecting ends of each wing were used to give each flat a south-facing balcony.
