TCT ward at Birmingham Children’s Hospital wins design award

The Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) Ward at Birmingham Children’s Hospital in UK, designed by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, has scooped the 2010 Building Better Healthcare (BBH) Award for Best Interior Design.

The new TCT facility has been designed by UK-based architectural practice Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands to cater to specific needs of its patients, with bright decor and areas. The judges praised the building’s sensitivity and response to brief.

The TCT has been designed to provide a six-bed extension to the existing oncology ward at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital in the form of a striking linear pod. An inviting environment with a non-clinical atmosphere has been created in an attempt to encourage friends and family to visit or stay overnight in one of the guest beds integrated into the bespoke bedroom furniture. A large ‘activity zone’ is featured at the heart of the ward, while a bespoke ‘inhabitable wall’ activates the entrance corridor with spaces for reflection, work and play.

The entry via a bright day-lit bridge leads into a social space incorporating full-height clear glazing and excellent views. Each bed space features a dedicated window and sculpted rooflight and patients can control and personalise their own environment.

A simple colour palette has been used throughout the unit, with a background of white highlighted with vibrant splashes of green hues chosen for their positive associations with health and nature.

Away from the bedrooms, a cosy den provides a space where patients can interact with each other or spend quiet time alone, with wall linings enlivened with floor-to-ceiling artwork, and furniture chosen to reflect a home-from-home environment.

The winners of the Building Better Healthcare Awards, which celebrates the latest innovations in healthcare design, were honoured on 11 November 2010 at The Brewery, London.
