Studio Lav - One to Watch

Who:

Studio Lav was founded by Central Saint Martins graduates Loukas Angelou and Vasso Asfi, who now work out of Stoke Newington. Their backgrounds in interior design and jewellery give them different perspectives with which to create products.

One of Studio Lav’s most interesting past projects is Designer Baking, a marriage of fashion and baking. This two-piece set of kitchen stamps, in a distinctive triangular shape in selected woods, uses iconic fabric patterns, such as Pied de Poule, to give baked goods a sense of ‘haute couture’.

Why:

Ombro uses a visual game created by two perpendiculars, with perforated metal surfaces forming an illusion of movement. The bottom grille can be used as storage with full or partial cover of items offered by the grille above. The end result would sit well in a luxury interior with a touch of art deco.

They sum up their design philosophy as playful and ironic, investigating the relationship between form and materiality and the emotional connection between people and objects. At last year's designjunction, the duo launched the Ombro collection.

Studio Lav has also produced Weave, a crockery collection that uses traditional wicker-weaving patterns used in the furniture design industry. Weave plate patterns ‘challenge material perception’, says Studio Lav.

Says Angelou: 'We created the table tops by incorporating strips of metal in different directions, which were inspired by railings.'
