PUMA launches new futuristic BMW X-CAT DISC trainer

A futuristic looking shoe designed by Puma has taken inspiration from the 2008 BMW GINA Light Visionary Concept Car.

A creative collaboration between Designworks and Puma has resulted in the X-Cat DISC, the latest edition of Puma´s DISC footwear franchise, aiming to provide a comfortable footwear experience

The unusual looking shoe showcases PUMA’s updated DISC technology, which promises to provide a perfectly snug fit. First launched in 1991, the system of the shoe worked as the disc located on the top of the shoe rotated, pulling internal wires throughout the shoe and tightening for a comfortable fit. The developed DISC system is much lighter and smaller with only five parts, it’s easier to turn and the internal wire system that wraps and secures the shoe is faster to tighten.

The outer shell of the shoe features a silver stretch fabric, similar to the metallic material used on the car and altered for footwear use.

As the shoe opens and closes it completely transforms, just like the car. The shoe’s silver material sits over the DISC closure system. When tightened, the wires are revealed under the material.

The final touches on the shoe include a laser cut across the front which is inspired by a gill like texture that appears on the car when its doors are open. PUMA’s iconic formstripe runs on the outside of each shoe in a reflective design, while BMW’s logo features on the DISC.

The design of the shoe is inspired by the BMW GINA Light Visionary Model, a concept model introduced in 2008. Featuring a seamless fabric outer shell and comprising of a flexible skin stretched over an articulated metal frame, the car is able to change shape. Doors open upwards and outwards, creating folds in the material that disappear when closed again.
