Photographer Iwan Baan takes Chicago from the air

Baan's visual essay on the windy city will go on display as part of next year's Chicago Architecture Biennial

A series of aerial photographs of Chicago by one of our favourite architecture photographers, Iwan Baan, is to go on show as part of next year's Chicago Architecture Biennial.

The photo essay, which captures the unique architecture and layout of Chicago, are the first commission for the event, which will take place between Oct 2015 and Jan 2016.

On its website, the Chicago Architecture biennial says: 'Over the past decade, Baan has transformed the practice of architecture photography, challenging the long-standing habit of magazines and architects themselves of representing architecture in a staged condition, devoid of its inhabitants.'

Shooting from the air, Baan emphasises key landmarks of the city's architectural history, including the Hancock Tower (designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in the late 1960s) and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture's interventions on the historic Illinois Institute of Technology campus designed by Mies van der Rohe, contextualising them within the broader cityscape.

To whet your appetite, here's a selection of the photographs:
