Paris’ Eiffel Tower Set to Undergo a 15-Year, €300 million Restoration

A landmark for life…

The Eiffel Tower is set to undergo major refurbishment in the next 15 years with a €300 million project that will preserve the attraction for the future. With 7 million visitors per year of which 90% are tourists, this could be well worth the investment.

The 128-year old tower still uses some of its original workings, making the need for a renovation more imperative than ever before. The news comes as the country bids for the 2024 Olympic Games and the Universal Exhibition in 2025.

The renovations will include a replacement of the tower’s lighting systems and a revamp of the tower’s lifts. The 15-year project will also include a routine paint job (of which 66 gallons of paint is used) and a replacement of the tower’s dazzling lights.

On site security will be improved and implemented with high-tech security and an enhanced visitor experience to reduce wait times, queues and shelter to keep visitors secure.

'There could be one or more places for the public to wait that are sheltered. Today, they are queueing in the rain and snow, and that’s not the best welcome for our foreign tourists,' said Jean-François Martins, the deputy mayor of Paris.

There hasn’t been a significant amount of work done on the landmark in recent years with its last renovation taking place three years ago and the last major restoration in 1986.

The 1,063 foot-tall tower is already dishing out €13.7 million per year on maintenance and plans to increase this by 45% with a total of €20 million euros per year. Paris’ mayor, Anne Hidalgo, believes the investment will provide a pleasant experience for tourists as well as the highest security.

The project will be presented to the council at the end of January 2017 for approval.
