One to Watch is Natalia Miyar Atelier, established last year by Cuban-American architect and designer Natalia Miyar after several years in architecture in Miami, and in interior design in Europe

Who

Cuban-American architect and designer Natalia Miyar enjoyed several years working as an architect in Miami before turning her hand to interior designing and founding her business Natalia Miyar Atelier. ‘During these years of study and in practice [as an architect], I developed a love of materiality, space and proportion that naturally led into interior design,’ she says. ‘My Atelier promises the capacity for original, exciting design and the professional skill of a leading practice.’ And while only establishing the studio in 2016, it already has a global network of clients.

As well as taking on interior design projects in the USA and Europe, the practice co-curated a project with The New Craftsmen and Crafts Council, for the British Craft exhibition, while also completing two large-scale private homes in London.

‘I spoke at Decorex and at the Design Centre Chelsea Harbour during London Design Festival in 2016,’ adds Miyar. ‘I am looking forward to more opportunities this year to continue to engage with different audiences.’

Why

‘Working for myself allows me the freedom to experiment and establish a unique design philosophy that subtly underpins all projects, rather than an obvious “house style”,’ says Miyar.

Her 2017 plans for the studio, while enjoying seeing the studio’s current projects ‘flourish’, will be opening an office in Miami, following her recently opened London HQ in South Kensington.

Relaxed: The practice’s second completed London residence was designed with a softer, relaxed theme, and provided bespoke furniture. Miyar says: ‘We used a pared-back yet warm organic palette of colours and textures to create unique spaces that have understated elegance and unequivocal comfort.’Relaxed: The practice’s second completed London residence was designed with a softer, relaxed theme, and provided bespoke furniture. And while not having a house style, Natalia Miyar Atelier has a set of design principles that Miyar intends to keep despite an increase in the number and sizes of its projects. ‘Paramount to our future goals is remaining true to the spirit of the Atelier by maintaining an intimacy [despite] the amount of work we take on, and ensuring each one is an expression of our core business values,’ she explains. ‘I hope to continue working on similar one-of-a-kind projects while expanding the geographic reach of our work. We would love to design a boutique hotel, which would offer an opportunity to explore the relationship between residential and hospitality design.’
