Who
Shortly after graduating from the industrial design degree course at Melbourne's Swinburne University of Technology in 2005, Christopher Boots accepted a job with lighting designer Geoffrey Mance, at his studio in Victoria, which Boots says contributed to his six years of lighting design 'training'. Producing statement lighting pieces that require skilled artisans, such as glass blowers, copper smiths, ceramicists and casters, Boots says his design methods are influenced by Mance's approach: 'He was always exploring new ideas and materials, which I still do as often as possible.

The Asterix series
The Asterix series The Asterix Series was launched last year and draws its inspiration from the keyboard character. A contemporary reinterpretation of a traditional lantern, the light combines LED with hand-crafted and polished brass. 'It's a design classic, in my humble opinion,' says Boots.

Taking a fresh eye and ensuring that there is always a new approach with materials and exploration is imperative in the design process. '

His first major solo commission, for the Mechanics Institute, in Ballarat, Victoria, spawned one of Boots' most popular designs - the Diamond Ring - using quartz crystal, neodymium, iron and carbon polymer.

Epic Diamond Ring
Epic Diamond Ring Born from its smaller sibling, Diamond Ring, following a client's request for a much larger version in Dubai, Boots worked with interior designer Kara Mann to create the piece. Featuring crystals as the 'diamonds', both versions can be suspended either horizontally or diagonally.

Why
Boots worked with Mance for two years, before buying the business in 2007 and acquiring a business partner. He sold his interest in it in 2011 and then set up his own practice.

'To start my own studio was perfect timing, personally, emotionally and professionally, and that is what you see today,' says Boots. This year Boots is showcasing his products at Design Miami, Design Days Dubai and Euroluce, Milan, among others. In 2013 Boots exhibited at 100% Design and now sells his products in the UK through Fiona Barratt Interiors. He has also exhibited ranges in San Francisco and Chicago, as part of his 'world tour'.

BCAA
BCAA Branch Chain Amino Acid is a customisable lighting feature that is 'your design to create', says Boots. Comprising several components, its molecular-like structure features hand-textured finishes in brass, nickel and 24-carat gold, among others. Also featured are various lamp suspension options.
