New inpatient oncology unit opens at Beaumont Hospital in Michigan

A new $12.5 million inpatient oncology unit has opened at Beaumont Hospital, Troy in Michigan, which is designed to meet the growing need for cancer care at the hospital and in northern Oakland and Macomb counties.

Created with amenities for patients as well as for families, the new 44,000 square-feet unit has 44 private rooms and complements the $14.1 million outpatient radiation oncology unit. Built with many patient-centered amenities, the new unit features adjustable temperature and lighting; built-in computer stations for bedside charting; Wi-Fi; an Internet-equipped TV entertainment system with access to movies; and care information.

Recognizing the important role of families in cancer care, the unit also includes two family-style living rooms with a resource centre, fireplace and visitor pantry; two private sleep rooms for family/caregivers; and a physical therapy gym for patients requiring rehabilitation as part of their care. Including a thoughtful design, the unit aims at providing patients and their families a space that is supportive and healing.

In addition to cancer care, the new unit also provides hospital care, including pain and symptom control, for patients of community-based, state-licensed hospice programs. It also provides various healthcare services in areas including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, combination therapies, surgery, palliative care, rehabilitation and supportive care.

The unit has been constructed and furnished with green principles incorporating Greenguard certified furniture, flooring, and plastic laminate for healthy indoor air quality. Recycled/recyclable materials have been utilised in solid surface countertops, rubber wall base and patient room flooring.

Designed for energy savings and minimal patient disruption, the unit has installed occupancy sensors, and dimmable LED lighting in nursing alcoves. It features large windows for natural light. Signs, artwork and a majority of the unit’s furnishings have been manufactured within 500 miles of the Troy campus, which has reduced pollution by reducing the distance for transporting materials.
