New Designers 2018: showcasing the UK’s best emerging design talent


Now into its 33rd year, New Designers is back for 2018, helping uncover the best emerging design talent from around the UK


Opening on Wednesday 27th June 2018, this year the New Designers exhibition will gather more than 3,000 of the brightest emerging artists under one roof. The two-week celebration will showcase the next generation of thinkers and makers, giving them a platform to welcome then into the UK design scene and showcasing never-before-seen work to thousands of industry professionals and design lovers.

With students from over 200 creative courses, the Business Design Centre in Islington will be transformed from 27-30th June and 4-7th July. Throughout the exhibition, career-making connections and commissions will be made, with New Designers acting as a critical bridge between design education and professional design success. 


Natalie Bell, Nottingham Trent University

Presenting an extensive range of work by recent graduates from leading universities and design schools, New Designers will immerse visitors and exhibitors alike in a snapshot of the UK’s vibrant, emerging creative talent scene. Each of the two four-day exhibitions that make up New Designers will be devoted to a different set of design disciplines.

Week One (27 – 30th June) will feature:

Week One highlights include graduates from the multi-award winning Textile & Surface Design (BA) course at Bucks New University; the internationally renowned Jewellery & Silversmithing (MA and MFA) course at the Edinburgh College of Art; and the highly respected Textile Design (BA) course from Arts University Bournemouth.

Highlights from Week Two include the exciting 3D Design (BA) course from Northumbria University; the Design for Film and Television (BA) course from Nottingham Trent University, which is benchmarked to contemporary industry standards of excellence; and the pioneering Sustainable Product Design (BA) course from Falmouth University.


Ashley Willard, Northumbria University

An exciting programme of talks, events and workshops run alongside the two-week exhibition; leading figures from the design industry will act as guest speakers alongside individuals from renowned brands, the education sector and the media. The talks and workshops have been created to complement the work on display, covering a wide range of design disciplines and interests.

The New Designers exhibition has a 33-year history of showcasing cutting edge design, and uncovering and launching the careers of countless stars now working in UK design. Previous exhibitions have featured Elle Decoration award-winner Vicky Covin; judge on The Great Interior Design Challenge Sophie Robinson; Charles Dedman, who has been honoured with a Design Guild mark - and even Thomas Heatherwick, who was spotted by Wilfrid Cass during the 1993 exhibition!
