Mwai London-based architecture practice

If only we could move ourselves off into floating bubbles to give the Earth a breather, says MWAI

If Only we could ‘give the world a breather’, we would move everyone – houses, offices, shopping and leisure activities – into floating bubbles somewhere in the stratosphere. A photovoltaic membrane would form the surface of these bubbles to enable a cyclical conversion of solar radiations into heat and power.

The Earth would be rid of development and would be allowed to regenerate itself and become a surface to enjoy and celebrate. Getting to the surface would be easy, thanks to the ‘space ladders’ that would take us down in approximately five minutes (as tested by skydiver Felix Baumgartner in 2012).

If Only we could ‘give the world a breather

During the day we could look down towards the Blue Planet and enjoy its purity, while at night, as seen from the Blue Planet, we would shine just like stars.

MWAI is a London-based architecture practice, established in 2009. The office is a team of young, experienced creatives led by two directors: Matthew Woodthorpe and Alessia Mosci, each with 16 years of experience working at the highest end of the architectural design market.

MWAI has built up a diverse portfolio of commissions including masterplanning, high-end residential refurbishment and restoration and cultural projects.

The practice is passionate about the delivery of high-quality, engaging places for people to experience and live in. Each project is approached individually, with a full understanding of the brief and a keen interest towards the history and context of the site. In the past years, MWAI has been involved in a number of projects for the redevelopment of the remote island of St Helena, where Napoleon died in exile.

Currently, the practice is working on the design for a new museum for Jamestown, the island’s capital.
