Michael C Place chooses his favourite work by Peter Saville

The first time I saw him (for real) was the launch of The Art of Selling Sound at the V&A (1991). I was in my early 20s, and remember him walking into the room resplendent, with a full-length coat worn over his shoulders and a glamorous girl on each arm. What an entrance. I knew for a long time that I wanted to design record sleeves but that sealed the dream!

From The Hip

For Section 25, by Peter Saville and Trevor Key (an important foil and contributor to his output). I love this sleeve and bought it in a second-hand record shop in Newcastle while at college. I loved the idea of bringing the code from Power Corruption and Lies to life. I also love sleeves that you don't necessarily 'get' on first viewing. Back then, I'd put the record on and stare at the sleeves. I miss that.

Anthony Wilson's headstone

Headstone

By Peter Saville, Ben Kelly, Paul Barnes and Matt Robertson. Suitably monolithic, beautiful in its simplicity, Anthony Wilson's headstone speaks volumes about the man. I chose this because every designer needs a patron, someone who wholeheartedly believes in their work. Peter had that patron in Anthony Wilson. It's what I can only describe as a very poignant full stop to one of design's truly great partnerships. And I love that it was finished three years after the 'event'; very fitting.
