London Design Festival round up: Design Destinations

We look at the five trade shows – the Design Destinations – taking place during London Design Festival.

Taking over London every September with a nine-day celebration of art, design and architecture, London Design Festival is comprised of over 400 different events, exhibitions and installations. As a city-wide event, the Festival is an essential platform for five of the capital’s major trade shows that take place across London every year. Becoming part of the Festival itself, these trade shows are known as Design Destinations.

Spread across London, the five Design Destinations showcase a wealth of new product launches, showcase current and future trends, and act as a platform to promote new and emerging talent. With so much happening during London Design Festival, it’s difficult to know what to look for or where to begin; that’s why we’ve created our round up of what each Design Destination has to offer:

100% Design

When? 19 – 22nd September
Where? London Olympia

Synonymous with some of the biggest names in design, 100% Design is the UK’s longest standing annual design event. Taking place at Olympia London, this year 100% Design is launching a refreshed programme, balancing new features and emerging names with a collection of industry favourites, and big name brands and innovators.

The show presents two new features for 2018; the first, 100% Futures, is a new exhibition that will celebrate forward-thinking design from a selection of British and international talents who have practices in London. Working under the theme of ‘Designing for London’, the exhibition will showcase some of the most exciting design work happening across travel, technology, well-being, public spaces and sustainability.

The show’s second new feature, 100% Forward, will highlight eight emerging talents across furniture, product, lighting and textile design. Each of the emerging designers will be championed by an established designer whose career has grown throughout the first decade of 100% Design. One such designer, Simon Pengelly, started his career when he presented at 100% in 1993 – he will be championing rising talent, Daniel Schofield.

One of the most hotly anticipated, forward thinking talks programmes in the design calendar, Talks with 100% Design, also returns to 100% Design this year. Visitors should expect to hear from the likes of Thomas Heatherwick, Kelly Hoppen MBE, Marcel Wanders and Farshis Moussavi; the talks will also host a series of inspiring sessions that reflect the very best in global design.

Decorex International

When? 16 – 19th September
Where? Syon Park

The only show of its kind for the high-end UK interior design industry, Decorex showcases very latest in luxury interior and design. Kicking off London Design Festival, the four day event will host over 400 exhibitors and feature furniture, lighting and interior designers, alongside fabric and textile companies.

For 2018, Decorex have chosen ‘Black Canvas’ as the show’s theme. Based on the theme, four interior design studios – Maddux Creative, Studio Suss, Designed by Woulfe and Henry Prideaux – will be designing an installation at the main entrance to the show. A fifth studio, Lambert & Browne, has been chosen to design the bar at Decorex, providing a fresh direction for the space with an elegant, contemporary design.

A packed programme of talks will feature industry leading names, and will explore craft, lighting, hotels and content with an emphasis on young and emerging designers. As well as this, up-and-coming names in British craft will be given a platform to showcase their work at Future Heritage; the space has been designed for visitors to Decorex to be able to discover and support new artists and designers, displaying the skills of the emerging talents.

Exhibitor launch highlights include paint expert Annie Sloan, who will be adding a new line of linens to its much anticipated fabric collection. In collaboration with Sir John Soane’s Museum, Blackpop will launch its new ‘Collector’s Collection’; luxury French bathroom brand THG Paris will be showcasing three new collections that have previously never been seen in the UK; and Timorous Beasties will present a curated selection of bespoke pieces, including wallpapers and fabrics.
