London Design Festival - a few of our favourite things


If the London Design Festival was a bit of a blur for you - or if you couldn’t get there at all, check our carefully chosen selection of lighting and furniture from the major shows


HB Lamp by Michael and George (spotted at Tent)

The debut product from design duo Michael & George, the HB Lamp is a whimsical floor lamp that looks like a giant (HB) pencil, and the first in the designers' Stationery Objects range. This year's LDF also saw the launch of the HB mini, which makes a perfect desk light.

The Clover Stool by VW+BS for Industry+

The Clover Stool by VW+BS for Industry+ is designed to reflect the clarity of Chinese peasant furniture that fulfils basic requirements for form and function, resulting in a seating design that is both simple and beautiful. The stool is formed from solid oak with aluminium cast fasteners, comes flat-packed and is available in a range of colours.

To say that Afghanistan has had a troubled history would be a ginat understatement. But the country also has a centuries old carpet industry that has produced some of the most highly skilled weavers in the world. Hand-knotted carpets are Afghanistan's largest legal export with over one million Afghans working directly or indirectly in the supply chain of this industry.

Some of these beautufil carpets were on show at this year's designjunction, with modern designs by the likes of Giulio Iacchetti and, Giacomo Barzaghi-Campo.

Designed by King Kong Design, a multi-disciplinary design studio founded in multidisciplinary design studio founded in 2009 in Amsterdam and based in Barcelona since 2011, Fold It Up! is a modular installation composed of interchangeable elements made from flat sheets of material.

Each of the modular elements is folded to shape and joined with staples and paper clips. These singular units then connect with each other in a range different ways to build up an organic and flexible architectural structure which can itself assume very diverse shapes.

This bookshelf has a concave front with shelves spaced closer together at the centre and becoming more curved at the top, bottom and to one side. The wooden bookcase can be used side-by-side with another that has a mirrored pattern to create a concave front.

Designed by Lucie Koldova for Brokis, a glass blowing specialist in the Czech Republic, Mona, a hand-blown lamp that's available as a pendant or as a standing lamp. We love the version in black, which has a cool, futuristic feel, especially the pendant version which hangs from textile straps.

Washington Collection by David Adjaye for Knoll International (spotted at 100% Design)

One of the recipients of this year's Design Guild Mark (an award given for the finest furniture in volume production by a UK designer), this is architect David Adjaye's first collection for furniture giant Knoll. According to the company, the collection 'transforms Adjaye's architectural and sculptural vision into accessible objects for the home and office.' It comprises two cantilevered side chairs, a club chair, an ottoman, a side table and a monumental bronze coffee table.

The chairs pictured are available in die-cast aluminium (Washington Skeleton) and reinforced nylon.
