If Only...We had the floating City ‘ThreeSixty’ Theatre

Says Alex Ward of Arney Fender Katsalidis

Social Interaction is essential in any thriving city. The urban setting of a city is what every dweller, traveller or worker seeks to engage with on a daily basis. City 'ThreeSixty' theatre is reminiscent of drive-in theatres where social interaction was prioritised and a sense of place was activated around the viewing of a film.

Imagine a city where the lost spaces of parks, plazas and rooftops are brought to life with scenes of people interacting while a film floats high above; silent images displayed on a soft, cloud-like fabric, supported by a lightweight super-structure. This temporary beacon needs the ability to deflate or inflate based on its use, and provides a much-needed contrast to the hardscape of the ever-growing concrete jungle.

Physical and digital city-planning initiatives can drive the platform for the citywide cinematic experience. Deck chairs and pillow beanbags should be introduced into the public realm, while mobile device apps -- with which audiences can vote for their desired viewing material -- and access to audio plug-ins should be developed.

City 'ThreeSixty' Theatre constructs a visual cue for social conversation and enhances the skyline of a thriving city.
