If Only... wellbeing in design was second nature

Says biophilic designer Oliver Heath

Since the industrial revolution, our daily connection with nature has gradually diminished and has been lost among concrete walls, corporate design, technology and sterile interiors. In this modern world that never sleeps, we feel a primordial urge to re-establish this lost connection with nature, craving spaces that evoke its calming energy. I'm a strong believer that incorporating nature into design can have a dramatic impact on the mind-set of those using the space.

Biophilic design suggests that we have genetically evolved to gravitate towards nature, natural materials and processes. Reinforcing this connection can reduce stress, increase calmness, wellbeing and productivity. Whether this is creating views out on to nature, maximising natural light, using natural materials, patterns, and plants or simply creating safe spaces for us to retreat back into, there is increasing research and data that demonstrates the many benefits that can come from understanding our evolution among the natural environment.

As designers we can help our clients to create better spaces - naturally inspired spaces that don't simply impress extrinsically but have a deeper connection with our psychological and physiological needs and wellbeing.
