Grimshaw’s first project in Russia opens

The terminal at the new Pulkovo International Airport has opened. The airport is a joint design effort between Grimshaw, Ramboll and Pascall + Watson, and the terminal's opening marks the completion of the first phase of the airport's master plan.

The new terminal's roof is designed to accommodate the extremes of weather experienced by the Russian city. The internal layout consists of distinct connecting zones, designed to echo the external layout of islands and bridges in St Petersburg and the terminal is predicted to handle 12 million passengers yearly.

Grimshaw project partner Mark Middleton said: 'This airport development is a quantum leap, easily holding its own among the world's top airports. I think the future for St Petersburg is bright; Pulkovo will become a large hub, drawing business from Asia and Eastern Europe.'

Funding for the airport scheme comes via a €1bn public-private partnership development programme - Russia's first. Ramboll was appointed lead design consultant in 2008, while Grimshaw has been retained on the project as concept guardians. Pascal + Watson is executive architects.
