Gort Scott Architects creates outdoor play area at London's Harlington Community School
London-based Gort Scott Architects has created a new outdoor play area that can also function as socialising and peer interaction space, at Harlington Community School in London.
The new outdoor play area within the space-constrained school features a series of shelters and outdoor furniture installed by Gort Scott Architects. The architects’ main objective was to ‘reclaim the play area’ that has been used as car park without a single seating area. The proposal involved the creation of new areas for student socialising besides retaining car parking.
The £40,000 ($62,439) project features a series of colourful exterior furniture pieces that are unique to the school. The build scheme includes a number of large benches made with recycled plastic planks supported by galvanised steel frames, and three transparent canopy shelters.
Gort Scott Architects’ participation in a workshop day with the school at Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) gave the firm a real insight into the issues faced by the students and the staff including the lack of space for socialising.
