Offering artisan interior and lifestyle pieces, new sustainable luxury interiors brand Banbayu proves great design can make a difference.
Based in the UK, Banbayu is an online, luxury fair-trade interiors brand that ensures that each and every one of its products has philanthropy at its heart. All of Banbayu’s collections are sustainably sourced from the artisans who make the products, ethically produced, and responsibly transported to the UK.
Founded by three friends - Patrick, Steffen and Roland - the brand evolved from their commitment to exploring the world’s cultures. Uniting wanderlust with luxury handmade crafts, the founders have curated a vast collection of home interior products after decades of travelling the continents – and during this process, they have striven to make sure all of the products were ethically sourced.
As well as being luxurious, each Banbayu collection has been handpicked and handcrafted; the products are inspired by their native countries, and are crafted by local artisans from some of the most diverse cultures around the world. All the materials used in Banbayu’s products are verified for cultural and ecological sustainability. Including fireplaces, furniture, lighting, and jewellery, Banbayu have expansive collections of ethical, luxury products which capture the spirit and vibrancy of their origins.
But there is more to this ecological brand than meets the eye – one of Banbayu’s key priorities is to drive sustainable change, focusing on supporting environmental organisations and local communities. For every item sold, Banbayu donates money back to charities in local communities across the globe, making sure that the original artists of the work receive their fair share.
They state that by buying from Banbayu, customers are “supporting local communities around the world, safeguarding generations of ethical craftsmanship and protecting natural resources”. One of the organisations that caught the Banbayu founders’ eye was Green School, a school built on the principles of sustainability and natural learning, where classrooms have no walls and pupils learn through creative classes - in the midst of the Bali jungle.
One of the School’s core missions is to support the local Indonesian communities nearby; almost 10% of students come from these communities, and the school continues to expand this ‘local learners’ programme with the support of donations. Since finding out about the project, Banbayu have been big supporters of the ‘local learners’, which has creating a supportive relationship between the ethical brand and Green School.
The brand states that every product in their carefully curated collection tells a unique story, creating an insightful look into the culture and tradition behind it. “It has been a privilege and joy,” they write on their website, “to meet the craftspeople who are so very skilled in creating such innovative and contemporary products that are both authentic and true masterpieces”.
