Emmanuelle Moureaux’s Tokyo art installation: A myriad of colours

The theme, ‘colour mixing’ was cleverly displayed through the movements of vibrant colours using NSK Ltd bearings.

NSK Limited, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of motors and automotive products, celebrated its 100th anniversary through an installation called, ‘Sense of Motion’, held at Tokyo shopping mall, Omotesando Spiral. Its vision, ‘setting the future in motion’ was captured through the use of bearings and hundreds of spinning colours.

French architect, Emmanuelle Moureaux, moved visitors with her immersive interpretation of ‘colour mixing’. Using over 100 colours and thousands of flower motifs, the artist created a space of surrealism surrounding guests with spirals of colour that transformed with each gaze.

The bearings, which run six metres high, swarm through the unoccupied space through 100 shades of colours and thousands of flowers, providing visitors with an immersive experience in a world of energetic colour.

The 25,200 flowers (yes, that many) are aligned in three dimensional grids. Each flower is unique, changing colour with each angle and as they rotate gradually amongst the bearings.

The stunning display is attached and suspended from the ceiling, slowly twirling with the help of NSK’s windmills installed atop, creating a thoroughly vivid experience.

Visitors can take part in the exhibition by touching the motifs enabling them to change gradient and essentially ‘colour mixing’ through the spinning motions.

Through the movement of NSK's rotating bearings, the installation evoked emotion and captured hearts, but not without Moureaux’s famous use of colours, which are a centre point in all of her work.
