Design editor and founder of Frieze magazine; editor, Designed by Peter Saville (Frieze, 2003)

BP
Republic

Peter's design for the sleeve of New Order's Republic was inspired by his interest in the possibilities created by software such as Photoshop, and his colleague Brett Wickens' perfection of the technique of blending one photograph seamlessly into another. There is an often-repeated graphic design rule: never allow technology to drive design! Peter broke this rule to brilliant effect. The proliferation of technology -- allowing the fusing of different sources, not only still images, but also sound, movies and text -- has revolutionised the production and consumption of culture. Peter's brilliantly ugly/beautiful, awkward/elegant design for Republic heralded that change.
