Discover the best architecture of London playing Pokémon Go


London is filled with historical and modern architecture which can easily be missed. Since the release of Pokémon Go it is safe to say it has been a momentous success, however what also has been a success is people exploring in London more than ever. Whilst in the midst of trying to catch a Pokémon, put the Pokéball down and take the opportunity to appreciate the surrounding architecture throughout the city. Here are the top five great pieces of architecture close to Pokémon destinations.


Kings Cross

A mammoth transformation took place in 2012 inside King’s Cross Station just in time for the 2012 London Olympics which has now become an iconic architectural gateway in the city. The designers John McAslan + Partners designed the Western Concourse, creating a visually striking change to the station. The showstopping renovation stands at 20 sq m tall and spreads out, enveloping the roof of the concourse like a web, to reach the full 150m length of the prevailing Grade I Listed building and creating an eye catching entrance to the station through the south end of the structure.

Shoreditch

Going east in the city will lead to M by Montcalm Shoreditch Tech City, which opened only in 2015 and is designed by London-based architect firm Squire and Partners. It is certainly hard to miss when visiting the quirky area; the bright white hotel is in the shape of a stretched diamond, with its point projecting into City Road. The idea of the distinctive building shape was inspiration by the diagonal stripe-based abstract painting Nataraja (1993) by modern artist Bridget Riley.

Hyde Park

After a tranquil stroll around scenic Hyde Park it is easy to forget you’re in the midst of London, upon exiting the park by Knightsbridge you will notice the extremely modern and remarkable looking ‘One Hyde Park’ residential development designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. Claiming to be the most expensive apartments in the world, the four towers of differing heights consist of 86 apartments with the top level of each block housing a two-storey penthouse suite.

Notting Hill

The Notting Hill area has been revamped throughout the years and has become a tourist destination without hosting any real landmarks, however what is available and scattered throughout Notting Hill and which continues to bring tourists daily are clusters of beautifully painted houses. The houses range from shades of bright crimson reds to pale lavenders. When you discover Portobello Road market, thanks to the architecture and colours that surround you, on a sunny day it could be convincing you have walked into Spain on market day.

Greenwich

A vast amount of stunning architecture can be found south of the river in Greenwich. In 2014, Irish architecture practice Heneghan Peng Architects designed a new architecture school for the University of Greenwich, planning to house the 2,000 students involved in the university’s architecture department. Located within the borders of Maritime Greenwich, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the student building features a limestone exterior designed to "complement but not mimic" the historical architecture whilst still look extremely modern with its tall, steel-glass arrangement, making it certainly worth a visit.
