Designing a Lifestyle Resort around Nature

Oval Partnership and FARM design 1 Hotel’s latest eco-conscious luxury lifestyle resort on Hainan Island

Celebrating nature and sustainability from its perch on Hainan Island’s stunning shoreline, 1 Hotel Haitang Bay, Sanya, is the first Chinese resort from luxury US-based brand, 1 Hotels. Drawing the inspiration for the design from the environmental beauty of the island, the architecture for the new resort has been designed by Oval Parnership, while the interior design was managed by Singapore-based FARM.

Combining innovative ‘green’ technologies with locally sourced natural materials including lava stone and red cedar, the eco-conscious architecture creates a ‘slice of island life’ for guests. The 294 contemporary guest rooms, suites and villas all feature locally sourced, unpolished volcanic basalt stone and wood, and are furnished with reclaimed or natural pieces, such as stools made from tree stumps, rattan rugs, and organic cotton upholstery.

Reclaimed materials have been used throughout 1 Hotel Haitang Bay, Sanya, from the stacks of salvaged Chinese roof tiles to the timber and steel – taken from old finish boats – that have been used to create the hotel’s seven dining and drinking venues. Everywhere guests look, the interior design and architecture of the resort captures the nature of Hainan Island’s natural beauty, building on the area’s resources and showcasing the wonder of Mother Nature.

1 Kitchen, the hotel’s all day dining venue, features a rammed earth wall, which forms a backdrop that complements the restaurant’s use of natural and organic ingredients, and evokes the imagery of the Island’s rocky coastline. Another of 1 Hotel Haitang Bay, Sanya’s dining venues, the Chinese fine dining restaurant Green House, takes after its name with the inclusion of floor-to-ceiling windows which allows the sunlight to nourish the exotic ferns, orchids and edible plants within the restaurant.

“We were taken by Sanya's raw nature of fertile volcanic plains, green forested hills, sandy beaches and sparkling waters,” says Nina Arily, a senior designer at FARM. “We wanted the interiors to capture the textures, diversity and spirit of the island.” “It has been a pleasure to work with FARM and to see them bring the nature-inspired 1 Hotel aesthetic to life through sustainable design,” says Arash Azarbarzin, CEO of SH Hotels & Resorts.

Not only does 1 Hotel Haitang Bay, Sanya, feature an eco-conscious build, but it has also been carefully designed to minimise its carbon footprint by utilising the natural resources around it. For example, the hotel features a solar water heating system; rainwater is collected and stored for reuse; and skylights and clerestory windows allow for natural daylight to be used over artificial lighting, wherever possible. In guest corridors and lift lobbies, natural ventilation systems take advantage of the hotel’s proximity to the sea – and the sea breeze – in order to keep these public areas cool.
