Design & Architecture: World’s 7 Best Metro Stations

Rådhuset Station, Stockholm, Sweden

This 1950s creation is truly one-of-a-kind. With art work spanning over 70 miles you’ll be in the right place for a lesson in European Art.

Initiated in during Sweden’s culture boom and in the aftermath of the Second World War, Swedish Democrats felt it was their responsibility to promote the ideology, 'Folkhemmet', also known as, ‘The People’s Home’ which they believed could be illustrated through art.

The station was opened on 31 August 1975 and is located on the blue line between T-Centralen and Fridhemsplan. The city launched competitions to give people a chance to win paintings by famous local artists for an affordable price, spreading unity and a 'sense of community' through the nation.

Organic architecture makes up this impressive underground with art-laden bedrock exposed and natural bold colours throughout. Swedish artist Sigvard Olsson created the red bed-rock art work which he called, 'The Findings' and regards the Kungsholmen’s historic evolution as the inspiration behind the design.
