Christopher Jenner designs interiors for new Atkinsons Maison
Multi-disciplinary studio founder Christopher Jenner has designed the interiors of perfumer Atkinsons’ new Maison in Mayfair.
With a long history of being the perfumer to British aristocracy, Atkinsons has returned to its roots in Mayfair with the opening of their new Maison in Burlington Arcade. The new flagship sits a stone’s throw away from 24 Old Bond Street, the iconic address where the company first took up residence in 1832.
Previously famed for their distinctive fragrances amongst the court of George IV, Atkinsons has given responsibility for their flagship store's interior design to London based designer Christoper Jenner. The designer has breathed new life into the brand’s relationship with the area, with a contemporary cast of Mayfair heroes, heroines and dandies.
Atkinsons’ new emporium spans three floors; on the lower ground floor, a barber shop offers a range of grooming treatments for men and women. Meanwhile, perfumes and fragrances are available on the ground floor, and will be sold in the characteristic Atkinsons bottles at the Perfume Bar.
The Perfume Bar has been crafted in Rio Nero marble and brass; Jenner’s strikingly contemporary design illustrates Atkinsons’ fragrance collection in a sensational material effect. Guests are invited to indulge themselves in difference scents to find one that chimes with their personality, set against the backdrop of the sleek, modern interior.
Unlike the polished purple-and-gold Perfume Bar, the Salon sits in lighter colours on the first floor of the Atkinsons Maison. Boasting clientele such as King George IV, Queen Victoria and Napoleon, this salon continues an age-old, intimate tradition of personally consulting visitors on the best choice for their fragrance.
Natural lighting filters through large windows, allowing the interiors to come together with a fine, detailed finish.“The modern notions of lifestyle and taste were invented by the Georgians who clamoured for novelty yet were meticulous about restraint,” Jenner comments, talking about the new Atkinsons flagship store. “That tension is the essence of design, so our aim for the new Atkinsons Maison has not been to integrate history but simply embody it for today”.
