China to Open World’s Longest Aerial Cycle Way
A safer and easier commute for cyclists…
The Chinese city of Xiamen has just completed the longest aerial cycle way in the world. The new project, soon to open to commuters (currently on trial only), will help tackle congestion while providing cyclists with a more pleasant way to travel.
The cycle path is approximately 4.8m wide with a four-lane carriage spanning 7.6km. The path is well linked across the city with 11 exits connecting commuters to six public transport hubs, including five residential areas and three business districts.

Similarly to London Boris bikes, the city will also be offering 355 bikes for hire, as well as, 253 spaces for personal bikes giving cyclists convenient access to the new path.
The structure, which can hold up to 2,000 cyclists, has been built beneath the existing elevated road, which is currently used by the city’s rapid transit bus line. This will better safeguard commuters from bad weather and provide them with extra safety measures including guardrails and 30,000 illuminated lights after dark.
Multi-sensor technology will be able to sensor when the pathway becomes too overcrowded, allowing smart gates to open and close when needed.
The impressive new route was completed in just six months and will be operated by Xiamen City Public Bicycle Company.
The cycle way is due to open to the public soon.
