Judges’ Comments

This relatively small project is landscape-led, and links the pavilion and the book bar to the river. A welcome oasis from the city throng, creating quiet, contemplative spaces.’ Sarah Wigglesworth

‘An elegant and yet simple solution for the renovation of the pavilion.’ Fernanda Marques

This renovation project, part of the East China Normal University, is located along the Liwa river, near the core of the campus. The project took an abandoned warehouse and an unused pavilion surrounded by low-quality landscaping.

With the existing architectural structures being kept, new functions such as reading space, exhibition space, tea drinking and relaxation areas have been created to satisfy different needs from students, teachers and other groups. The project has also greatly upgraded the banks of the Liwa river.

The warehouse was repaired and expanded through additions, including a glass house connecting to a striking new outdoor, corten steel structure. A partial mezzanine has been added under the slope roof, creating a private space for thinking and reading. On the exterior, hit-and-miss brickwork creates a simultaneously playful and harmonious appearance. During the renovation of the pavilion, the space was broadened by keeping the main structure as much as possible while demolishing the existing glass door and windows. The base is decorated and remade as a sculpture, symbolising a boat or illuminated water lantern floating on the river.

The renovation project is based on a harmony of architecture and landscape. A waterside platform, partial sunken square, winding footpaths and public open space have been added to upgrade the landscape.
