Judges’ Comments

Small but perfectly formed, a great example of how strong architectural principles and concepts can work at minuscule scale. The interplay of materials and volumes is inspired and unique.’ Tina Norden

‘Bold and elegant with impeccable detailing.’ Maria Cheung

Repoussoir involves an intervention within the familiar setting of a terraced, brick London house with rear outrigger. It includes a groundfloor rear/side extension, internal reconfiguration and a lowered garden/garden room.

The design objectives for the project included the desire to create a flexible, open plan layout, to make better use of the under utilised side return and to allow greater levels of daylight into the interior living spaces. Rear external walls and internal partitions to the ground floor were removed, dissolving the threshold between inside and outside. This creates one large open-plan space that is both internal and external, house and garden.

To maintain this connection, a unique structural solution of interconnecting, pared back perpendicular steel frames was introduced, with infill frameless roof glazing and glazed aluminium bi-fold doors forming the primary building envelope. A change in level from front to back, along with differing ceiling heights beneath the outrigger, rooflights and historical ceiling heights at the front, introduce a variety of zones and light conditions across the open-plan arrangement. The anthracite frames act as a common factor that is omnipresent, visually connecting all spaces together.
