Originally built in the 1960s, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has seen a fair few additions and redesigns in its time – all thanks to Benthem Crouwel Architects, who have been overseeing the redevelopments since the 1980s. The large, grey structure was designed with passengers in mind; it was made to be easily navigable, and the broad corridors with glass walls let travellers see their airplanes from across the room.

Despite the fact that the airport has undergone a fair few expansions, all the gates are still technically under one roof. It uses a branch-like gate system that extends from the central terminal and gathers the planes around it. The airport has also grown to include a library, indoor children’s park, and even a branch of Amsterdam’s national museum, the Rijksmuseum, which – you guessed it - was designed by Benthem Crouwel.
