9 June 2016Designed when he was a teenager, with his father Marc Brunel, Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s very first project - the Thames Tunnel, spanning 396m underwater - was a world first. Celebrated with underground fairs and banquets before being converted for steam trains, its entrance shaft has lain inaccessible and unused for more than 150 years.
