The Prodigy's Maxim, under the alias MM, this week launched his first ever art exhibition, entitled Lepidop Terror. More than just your typical art exhibition, Lepidop Terror is a sensory experience, which uses sounds, smells and lighting as well as the art itself to create an overall experience.

'I feel a sense of freedom when I paint. There are no restrictions and you can let your imagination run wild. I now see everything under one umbrella: music, art, fashion - they are all about creativity.' MM

While taking time out from touring with The Prodigy - best known for songs, Firestarter and Smack My B*tch Up - MM has created a series of dark and thought provoking paintings, many featuring butterfly motifs. But girly prints these are not, as from the offset the viewer is struck by stunning hues and what appear to be conventional painted butterflies, but on closer inspection the reality is that of creatures armed with machetes and threatening looks.

The exhibition, curated in a 'room within a room' engages the viewer subliminally, through sight, sound and smell. The clinical brightness of the external space encloses the dark, curtained room, or 'cocoon' where the soft smell, low frequency sounds and changing lighting induces a mysterious ambience.

If a painting isn't working and I'm not 100 percent happy with the outcome - if I feel I haven't injected any soul into it - what I do is burn it and set it free. To me, it is like putting a wounded animal out of its misery.' MM

The exhibition is open 15 - 26 September at INC Space, London WC2H
