Gareth Gardner looks at the new landscapes being created by Crossrail

Europe's biggest civil engineering project - the massive £15bn Crossrail scheme - is creating huge holes and opening up radical vistas across London. This particular excavation will eventually contain the new Tottenham Court Road station. The £1bn redevelopment of this end of Oxford Street will eventually feature a mixed-use scheme by architect Hawkins/Brown, located directly above the station entrance. A further development by AHMM will include a theatre to replace the much-loved Astoria, torn down to make way for Crossrail. The station itself is being designed by a multidisciplinary team of Arup, Atkins and Hawkins/Brown. First train services are expected to arrive in 2018.
