Judges’ Comments

‘Strong conceptually. Elegant balance of materials that captures the idea and juxtaposition of interior and exterior in an engaging way.’ Sarah Wigglesworth

‘Novel concept, boldly executed.’ Maria Cheung

‘This one really captured my attention through its beautiful, threedimensional manipulation of space. Simplicity, elegance — a really lovely modern interpretation of a teahouse’ Tina Norden

Tingtai Teahouse is located in a former factory space and art gallery in Shanghai’s Moganshan Road art district. The client sought to create a traditional Chinese teahouse with a modern aesthetic. The traditional teahouse is comprised of private rooms, each offering an individual spatial experience, where friends can gather to enjoy the ritual of tea.

The space was stripped back to its raw state, exposing the patina of the concrete structure, the old brick walls and ceiling. An existing mezzanine was removed to expose a double height space with high-level clerestory windows above. A series of teahouses with shifting roof lines and clad in brushed stainless steel was inserted into the space, reading as singular insertions. The upper rooms connect with the original clerestory windows. Each of these rooms is bookended with full-height glazing offering views to the activities below and natural light from the windows above. At lower level, a glass horizon frames the teahouse interior.

The teahouses rest on a dark-green terrazzo landscape, allowing guests to inhabit this landscape with tables nestled within. The interiors of the teahouses are clad in oak to create a simple yet warm interior. Upon entering, white nougat terrazzo forms a floating staircase, held by a fine metal green structure.
